PROJECT PROFILES : MERCED COUNTY BOX CULVERT

The Shanks Road/Letteau Avenue Pre-Cast Box Culvert Improvement Project was by no means your standard every day box culvert project. The project consisted of (3) equal segments of 8’-0” by 5’-0” reinforced box culvert totaling 197 linear feet with miters and exposed rebar on three sections which were to have a headwall cast onto before project completion. The project is located in the Community of Delhi, in Merced County. The box culvert was installed in an existing irrigation canal with a new county road to be constructed on top which connects residents in this part of the town to State Highway 99. US Concrete Precast Group Northern California was selected and the Precast Manufacturer by the County of Merced and Agee Construction as the Contractor. The scope of the contract was to complete the contract within 34 days starting on the 3rd day after contract award. US Concrete was able to meet their contractual commitments to the County of Merced and assisted with onsite inspection to the contractor. With a relatively small window of time to complete this project due to the importance of reopening the canal and road as soon as possible, the Merced County Public Works Department from Randy Bardini, P.E. and Project Engineer to Tony Kasper Senior Inspector stressed the importance of keeping our schedule and working together. This group also included Robert Servadio General Superintendent and Tal Eslick Superintendent of Agee Construction and their construction team as well as Ango Li and Israel Villalobos of the US Concrete Precast Group Northern California.
The use of precast box culverts reduces the construction time and in this case was installed in three days with the road and irrigation canal opening up short there after. Precast Box Culvert like Precast in General allow for faster construction times reducing disturbance and inconvenience to both businesses and the public and really seem to be appreciated by all who come in contact with them.
